In the grand scheme of things, it didn’t rain too terribly often. There were some clear nights, which led to cloudy mornings, which led to stormy afternoons. When life gives you rain, you get some work done, so that’s a plus. There is free wifi in paradise. Who knew?!

The Experience

From the capital of Malé, we flew via prop plane to Kadhdhoo Airport and proceeded to take a 15 minute speed boat ride (complete with wi-fi!) to the Laamu Atoll in the southern region of the Maldives. Upon docking, it appeared that a good portion of the resort was on stilts, which translates to: over the water. Remember “What’s Your Fantasy” by Ludacris? Yeah, this was mine. This, plus the fact that Six Senses Laamu had a barefoot policy. No shoes necessary! I felt right at home.

The Bungalow

After receiving our own bikes for the weekend WITH monogrammed wooden plaques on them (it’s a car-free island), we biked down to Jetty A and onto bungalow 24. The outside area was even bigger than the inside area, which perhaps I should’ve expected. Who wants to spend time indoors when the great outdoors look like this?

Sure, the deck and widow’s peak were impressive, but the outdoor shower and glass-bottom tub had me giddy like Christmas morning. They were the perfect Maldivian accessories complete with views of the deep blue sea. Have you ever seen anything like this tub?! I didn’t think so. I had my eyes peeled for fish, sharks and manta rays, but it wasn’t until after the fact that I remembered the snorkelers…

The Cuisine

With six different eateries to choose from, you’ll be well fed here. No matter what table you happen to reserve, fear not – there’s a view everywhere as each restaurant is open-air and either beachside or over-the-water. Also on the menu are fresh herbs! Six Senses has a green thumb and lots of love for its own lush garden.

Choose from international fare, Japanese staples, organic cuisine, poolside temptations and even a chocolate studio and ice cream parlor, complete with 46 flavors! Tip: go for Burnt Milk. Trust me on this one.

The Activities

My advice to you is if you aren’t a certified scuba diver before you come to the Maldives, do something about that. Laamu Atoll is a diver’s paradise with amazing visibility and rare marine life. Not only a diver’s playground, Six Senses Laamu offers surfers what they can’t get just anywhere – the Yin Yang break with big waves from June – September.

Apart from extreme water sports, guests can dine on a private sand bank, go dolphin cruising, island hopping, hang with the locals or hang zen with some aerial yoga.

Maybe you came to the middle of nowhere to get away from it all. Take some time to relax in a hammock on the beach or get pampered in the spa. Take it to the wine cellar and spend an afternoon drinking the day away. You’re on vacation, after all!

The biggest surprise from the stay? How accommodating the resort was to children. This paradise wasn’t just for honeymooners (or mother-daughter trips!). With a jungle cinema and 46 ice cream flavors to indulge in, the resort also has the perfect room – opt for the Lagoon Beach Villa with two bedrooms and a private pool. The desired mode of transportation is by bike. Just make sure they can ride easy, and fly easy at that – nobody said paradise was a breeze to get to.

It’s Always Earth Day in the Maldives

To put icing on the cake, Six Senses Laamu is committed to reducing their carbon footprint at every step along the way – from construction to future development. With huge efforts in energy conservation, waste management, and nature/reef protection, it’s evident that this endeavor has been rooted in the foundation of the property since the beginning, and the environmentalist in me is oh so proud!
