If you didn’t know the definition(s) of a staycation, consider yourself now educated. You’re welcome. Last week, I had the chance to take a relaxing staycation in one of the most tranquil environments of Buenos Aires. A serene setting in the middle of a bustling metropolis? Truth. It exists! Algodon Mansion invited me to stay with them for a few days in order to experience a home-away-from-home, or a stunning suite down the street from my own apartment. Sometimes all you need is a staycation in order to relax, rejuvenate and retire for an evening or two…

The Experience

Situated in the well-to-do neighborhood of Recoleta, Relais & Chateaux’s Algodon Mansion is prime real estate near some of the best restaurants, shops and attractions in the city. This area of town is also known for its European architecture, giving more meaning to Buenos Aires’ “The Paris of South America” description, often displeasing many locals. As they say, “It’s the Buenos Aires of South America!” Indeed, it is. This 1912 six-story mansion incorporates just 10 suites full of luxurious amenities and some peace and quiet.

The Suite

My 1,200 square ft suite of amenity-packed space was so worth the 15 minute taxi drive. Oh, my own personal butler over a shoebox apartment for two people with five suitcases? Forget the taxi. I’d walk to make that kind of reservation a reality. I didn’t, but I would’ve.

My suite included a living room area and a giant king-sized bed paired with electronic curtains, making it impossible to get out of the cloud-like environment in the morning. Also featured was a mini-bar fully loaded with Algodon Wine Estates vino alongside my favorite component, a cavernous limestone and marble bathroom. The mansion was full of simple elegance such as this tub setting, making it hard to drive the 15 minutes back home as check-out loomed near. What do you think the rent goes for here? They even have a pillow, sheet, and bathrobe menu. Is that the definition of luxury? Perhaps.

Algodon Club & Wine Bar

A celebrated restaurant and wine bar offer local ingredients and grapes from Algodon’s own private collection: Algodon Wine Estates in Mendoza, Argentina. I was lucky enough to be presented with a wine tasting by the hotel’s sommelier, Sebastián. Although I’ve drunk my fair share of wine at various wineries and vineyards, I’m no pro. Thus, my palette is not as refined as Sebastián the Sommelier, so I deferred to him to explain the tannins, fruits, spices and smells in my Chardonnay, Pinot and Bonarda. T’was an enchanting evening which had me hooked, not to mention drink with love with Algodon Mansion.

Amenities

If you treat your liver the same way dry counties treat their inhabitants, or if beer is more your thing, then great. Leave more vino for me. There’s far more to experience here than just a delectable wine flight and cheese platter. Allow me to explain. On the top floor of the mansion lies an oasis in the sky complete with Le Spa and rooftop deck/pool. You could spend some serious time up there basking in different treatments or the Argentine sun. No matter what you choose, we’re all better people in the end for staying at the Mansion. Whether it be for resveratrol in the wine, rejuvenating minerals in their spa oils, or some good ole vitamin D, there’s something for everyone at Algodon Mansion.
